Oct. 13 (Sat)

 

Today, nineteen students, one from each research group, participated in a reference workshop at the Kyoto Prefectural Library. The students learned how to use the library and request archived materials from the staff. The students will use this knowledge to help their groups use the library to find information for their research projects.

 
 
 
 

Oct. 6 (Sat)

 

Although there was some concern about the approaching typhoon, Toba was able to carry out the STEP English Proficiency Test today. A total of 110 students took the listening and writing sections of the Grade 2 and Pre-2 test.

 
 
 
 

Oct. 1 (Mon)

 

The students worked on the English presentations they will give during the SGH Study Trip to Shanghai today. The first grade students will introduce Toba High School, while the second grade students will present their research projects from Innovation Studies II. The students worked on how to clearly communicate their ideas in English.

 
 
 
 

Sept. 29 (Sat)

Today the first grade Global Course students began working on their group research projects. Each group chose a topic based on one of these five themes: Regional Art, Human Rights, Cultural Artifacts, Education, and Industry.

 

Each group talked about what topic they would choose. Using a method introduced by Prof. Inui from Kyoto Koka Women's University, they discussed until they could all agree on a group topic.

 

As a next step, the groups will begin working on their research projects in earnest.

 
 
 
 

Sept. 29 (Sat)


Today, second grade Global Course students in the elective "Global Home Economics" class took part in a special lesson on the making of fish soup stock by the master chief of the Heihachi Tea House Inn. It was an opportunity for the students to learn about the history and traditions of washoku traditional Japanese cooking as well.

 
 
 
 

Sept. 22 (Sat)

 

Today, first grade Global Course students took part in a lecture and workshop about team-building by Toba graduate and current Kyoto Koka Women's University Associate Professor Inui Akinori. As part of a team building exercises, student groups tried to stack 30 A4 size pieces of paper as high as possible. In the lecture, Associate Professor Inui talked about how to refine their research questions effectively.

 
 
 
 

Sept. 19 (Wed)

Today the fourth preparatory meeting for the SGH Shanghai Study Trip was held. The students took part in a lecture about Chinese history, government, and economy. In addition, the students continued working on their entries for the Business Plan Grand Prix.

 
 
 
 

Sept. 15 (Sat)


Today was the first class after the summer break of first grade Innovation Studies I. The student groups shared the results of their summer fieldwork with each other. Groups interviewed local people, and visited many businesses or city government offices.

 

From this term, the groups will build on what they learned during the field to continue working on their research projects.

 
 
 
 

Sept. 15 (Sat)


Today, members of the South Kyoto Rotary Club took part in a panel discussion on the theme of "The Significance of Work" for first grade Academic Course students. Afterwards the students discussed their ideas in groups, with one group presenting findings in front of everyone. The students learned a lot about working in this era of globalization.

 
 
 
 

Sept. 14 (Fri)

Today, the third preparatory meeting for the SGH Study Trip to Shanghai was held. The students used the Internet to learn about the company they will visit in Shanghai, including their corporate social responsibility (CSR) program.

Today the second prep session for the SGH Shanghai Study tip was held. The students presented what they found out during their research over summer vacation, and discussed their research themes.

Two first grade Global Course students participated in Sagano High School's HLAB Collaboration Program. Twenty-one prefectural high school students, overseas University students, and students at Universities in Japan joined in this two day program. On the first day, the students heard a special lecture and spoke about their dreams and career plans with the University students. On the second day, Toba's students joined with a group of first grade students from Sagano High School to take the University students on fieldwork in Kyoto City. After the fieldwork, the groups made presentations and held a discussion on the theme of "Improving the Quality of Tourism Experiences for Foreign Visitors."

 
 
 
 

Aug. 17 (Fri)
Today the second grade Global Course students visited the Toyonaka campus of Osaka University to take a part in a lecture on Academic Writing, which was given by Professors Shindo, Hori, and Sakajiri and student TAs. They learned some important methods for writing research papers and organizing information. The students will use what they learned today as they continue working on their Innovation Studies II research projects.

 
 
 
 

Today in the morning, the group visited Gyeongbok Palace and learned about the history of the Joseon dynasty. In the afternoon, they visited Hanyoung High School, where they went with the students to do fieldwork at the nearby Gildong local market.

 
 
 
 

Today the students visited the local office of the Kataoka Manufacturing Company and learned more about the business. In the afternoon, they visited SJT company. They were able to experience entering a clean room, and they learned about the process of manufacturing touch screens.

 
 
 
 

After departing on time, the students arrived on time at Incheon International Airport. In the afternoon they visited the local offices of CLAIR where they received a briefing about Korea. After that, the students gave two presentations. One was the revitalization of local markets and the other was about Japanese kimono. After the presentations, the students had a discussion with the CLAIR staff and received some advice.

 
 
 
 

Aug. 1 (Wed)

Today, twelve first grade students took part in summer fieldwork for their Innovation Studies I research projects at The Museum of Kyoto. Mr. Murano Masakage, a curator at the museum, gave the students a tour of the facilities, including behind the scenes areas which are not normally open to the public. The students were able to interview Mr. Murano and learn many things about how interesting it is to run a museum.

 
 
 
 

Aug. 6 (Mon)
Today at 5:30AM ten students (six first graders and four second graders) departed on the SGH Korea Seoul Study Trip. During the trip they will make presentations on their research projects at the offices of CLAIR Seoul, do fieldwork with students from Hanyoung High School, and take part in an internship the Korea branch of the Kataoka Manufacturing Company.

 
 
 
 

July 30 (Mon)

Today six second grade Global Course students who are researching about business took part in a one day internship run by the Kyoto Association of Small Business Entrepreneurs. The students were able to visit two local companies: Katsura Kenzai and Agency Assist. They learned about the workings of these two companies from the perspective of both managers and employees, as well as about working in general. They were also able to ask a lot of questions related to their research projects.

 
 
 
 

 Kansai JICA Workshop 2018/07/27 

July 27 (Fri)
Japan Overseas Cooperative Association (JOCA) Osaka Branch Representative Mr. Kawai and staff person Ms. Yoshida gave a workshop to a total of 88 students (all the first grade Global Course students and a number of normal academic course first and second graders). Mr. Kawai, who is a Toba graduate, and Ms. Yoshida spoke about their experiences volunteering overseas for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as well as introducing some of the activities of JOCA. Then the students role-played in groups and discussed how people of different nationalities and cultures can get along.
