The second year Global Course students who study physics attended a special lecture given by Mr. Mameno Kazunobu, General Manager at Research and Development Headquarters of Kataoka Corporation, and Mr. Hayashi Keisuke, a researcher at the Headquaters, on February 6th (Th). The lecture was about scientific developments, laser-processing technology, and display technology, which have been important parts of the basis of manufacturing technology of modern Japan. This lecture gave the students an opportunity to reflect upon the scientific subjects they have been studying, and to focus their thoughts on the further studies in the near future.

Global Network Kyoto Forum 2020 was held at Kyoto Institute of Technology on February 1st (Sa).　9 Kyoto prefectural high schools participated in this event.　These representative teams from participating schools gave their presentations in the morning session.　The Toba team gave a presentation about social media and tourism in Taiwan.　In the afternoon session, various poster sessions were given, and 3 Toba research teams from Innovation Studies II took part in this session.　Although they seemed to be a little nervous, they tried their best, answering the questions asked by the audience, including students from other high schools and university professors.　All the first year Global Course students listened to both the morning and afternoon sessions, in which they learned various research methods, which gave them a new perspective on their research projects.　All the Toba members who gave their presentations had tried their best to get well prepared since the beginning of the third term, editing their slides and rehearsing their presentations until just before their presentation on that day.　Unfortunately, they didn't win any prizes, but they seemed to be glad that they had given a satisfactory level of performance in the sessions.

The first year humanities and science course students had the Period for Integrated Studies on January 25 (Sa), in which they had the presentations on their researches, whose basic themes are based on "the Wisdom of Kyoto," accumulated wisdom of Kyoto in terms of culture and society and its people's daily lives." They have been working on their research projects for a year, utilizing the data they collected during the summer vacation, and using information literacy skills they acquired in Information Study for Participating Community. At the end of the sessions, they received valuable feedbacks and comments from Mr. SUGIOKA Hidenori, an associate professor of the University of Fukuchiyama, undergraduate students at the university, and graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Osaka about the contents and effective use of materials in the presentations as well as their presentation skills. They seemed to get a lot of new insight into further researches they will work on in the near future.

The first year humanities and science course students had the Period for Integrated Studies on January 11 (Sa), in which they had the rehearsal sessions for the presentations which are to be held on January 25 with a valuable assistance of Osaka University undergraduate and graduate students. All the members of the research teams made their slides for their presentations with basic skills they had learned in Information Study for Participating Community, and they tried hard to put their explanations within the time limit of 10 minutes. After all the rehearsal sessions were over, they received effecxtive feedbacks from university students.

The first year Global Course students participated in a two day overnight seminar at the Ritsumeikan Biwako Kusatsu campus from January 11 to 12. They worked on the presentations on the research projects of Innovation Studies I. They received a lot of support from Ritsumeikan University underdraduate and graduate students on the things they should keep in mind when they give a presentation as wel as on the powerpoint materials they are supposed to use in their presentations. After the training sessions were over, Rismeikan students talked about their student lives at university, which will undoubtedly work as a great clues to their furture course selection in the near future.

The second year Global Course students had Innovation Studies II on January 11 (Sa), in which they learned the fundamentals for writing a research paper, such as effective use of and topic sentences and paragraphs. The selected members of the research project teams are going to take part in Global Network Kyoto Forum 2020, held on Feburuary 1, and WWL･SGH × TANKYU KOSHIEN 2020, held on March 21.

The second year Global Course students participated in a lecture organized by Mr. OKA Iwataro, president of Oka Bokkodo, during Landscapes of Kyoto and the World on January 11 (Sa). Oka Bokkodo is a company which engages in the conservation of national treasures and important cultural properties, mainly in the field of paintings and writing. The students learned the important role of "Sokoshi," engineer to repair, restore, and preserve art works such as paintings and calligraphies painted or written on fragile media like papers or silk. They also learned that tremendous care must be taken to ensure that all the restoring procedures do not impose any damage on cultural properties of historical significance, which requires Sokoshi of high ethical standards. They realized that it is necessary to combine various knowledges from humanities and sciences in order to repair and preserve cultural properties appropriately, which will give the students important clues when they start preparing for selecting future courses. They were greatly impressed to find that the level of the skills introduced in the lecture has been highly recognized not only in Japan but also globally.

The Toba students left Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport past noon, and got safely back to Japan. They experienced various activities before and during this study program in Taiwan, such as prior learning, conducting a fieldwork, giving presentations, and visiting companies, through which they met kinds of people who they had never met in their daily life before. The result of their research is going to be presented at Global Network Kyoto Forum, organized by Kyoto Prefectural board of education, which is to be held on February 1. It would not be an overstatement to say that what they have done during the past 5 days should deserve to be called an embodiment of what Toba SGH program has been aiming for all these 5 years.

Toba students visited Wanchungong, a famous temple located in Taichung, in the morning, and interviewed local people there about their research, and they talked to them about what they find appealing about the temple. In the afternoon, they visited Taichung Municipal Taichung First Senior High School, in which they gave a presentation about their research project in English and joined an exchange program with local students.

One of the key issues focused on by the participating students is the effect of tourism induced by media. The students went out in the city of Taipei to interview local people and tourists visiting there in the morning. One of the places in which they conduced their interview was a place which was used in a promotion video crip of a popular Japanese music band, "back number," and was featured in a TV program, "Kodokuno Gurume," which introduces cheap and tasty local dishes from across Japan and the world. In the afternoon, they visited National Taiwan University, during the vist of which, they took part in the tour around the university library specially organized for this occasion. They were provided with a precious opportunity to look at not only the latest facilities of the library but also invaluable pieces of material. They are going to visit Taiwan Kataoka Corporation tomorrow, whose head office is located in the city of Kyoto.

After having arrived safely at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, we took a train at Taipei Station, and visited Presidential Office Building, Bank of Taiwan, and 228 Peace Memorial Park, through the excursion of which the students had many opportunities to think about the historical relationship between Taiwan and Japan. After that we visitied Shilin Night Market, in which they were fully exposed to the local food culture of Taiwan. They are going to conduct a fieldwork and try to get valuable information for their presentation they will make in Global Network Kyoto Forum in February 2020. They are also going to visit National Taiwan University in the afternoon and interview university students about their research projects of Innovation Studies II.

4 Global Course students, who are the members of one of the research project teams of Innovatoin Studies II this year, and an exchange students on Kakehashi Project took part in All Japan High School Forum 2019 on December 22, held in Tokyo International Forum. This is one of the biggest events of SGH and WWL high school students, in which various topics on SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) are to be taken up in poster sessions and discussions. Toba students gave a presentation about AI and business activities in English, and through various interactions among other participants, they were able to obtain new insight into their research projects.

The second year Global Course students had Innovation Studies II on December 14 (Sa), in which they brushed up the research planning sheets for their research papers, which are due in the end of the third term. The selected members of the research project teams are going to take part in All Japan High School Forum 2019, held on December 22, Global Network Kyoto Forum 2020, held on Feburuary 1, and WWL･SGH × TANKYU KOSHIEN 2020, held on March 21.
