the SAGANO ENGLISH NEWSLETTER!

 

 In this Newsletter we report events that took place after the last issue.

 

1. English Immersion Camp 2010

  101 1st year students attended the all-English overnight camp in July. They had

6 workshops by Japanese English teachers, 2 workshops by native speakers of

English, a special lecture by simultaneous interpreters, Evening Gathering and Skit

Contest.

 

・Here is a report from Clare’s and Joe’s class.

1. From Clare’s class

  The English Immersion Camp

of 2010 was my first time giving a

fun workshop based in English.

My lessons are usually fun and I

enjoy them, and so do my students.

However, my lessons must be

educational and academic.

  The English Camp gave me a chance to have a lot of fun, play games and do

difficult activities. I also got to meet some of the first year students who I don’t

usually teach. It was really enjoyable to be around new people who were so

energetic and enthusiastic. The students used English all the time and put a lot of

effort and energy into completing the activities. I was really impressed!

  I hosted a workshop based on a pirate theme. It was amazing how much fun

the students had dressing up as pirates, solving puzzles, learning new words and

competing against each other!

  I loved having fun with all the students at the English Camp. It was so nice to

talk to them all and get to know them better. Sometimes Japanese students are

shy, but at the English Camp they were really eager to talk to me in English. This

made me very happy, so I am really looking forward to next year!

 

2. From Joe’s class

I gave a workshop designed to give

students a chance to be creative and use

teamwork skills. Students were placed

into groups of four and given photographs

of people and a simple worksheet. The

groups then worked together to create

short stories for each photograph.

I am always surprised at the student`s English ability and how much they can

accomplish in such a short time. The students had a great time and created unique

characters for the stories which they then shared with the rest of the workshop.

It was fun for all and a great opportunity to speak one on one with students in

different environment. In the classroom, students can be shy and reserved, but at the

English Camp the students eagerly try their hardest to communicate.

The 2010 English Immersion Camp is the fourth Immersion Camp I have attended.

The English Camp is a wonderful place for students to use their vocabulary and flex

their English muscles. 2010 has been the most successful camp yet and I am looking

forward to the 2011 English Immersion Camp.

 

 

2. The 10th COSMOS Cup

  English Recitation Contest

  55 students from 28 different junior high schools took part in the contest on Sep.

25 and 15 students were chosen for the final contest.

ようこそ『嵯峨野イングリッシュニューズレター』へ

　今回は前号発行以降の学校行事についてお伝えします。

 

１．英語集中合宿２０１０

　７月、１年生の生徒１０１人が英語のみを使用して生活する英語

集中合宿に参加しました。日本人教師による授業６時間と、ＡＬＴ

による授業２時間、さらに同時通訳者による特別講義や夜の集い、

スキットコンテストなどが行われました。

 

・ＡＬＴのクレアとジョーによる授業のレポートです。

１．クレアの授業

　英語集中合宿２０１０は私にとって、英語を使った楽しい演習を

行う初めての機会になりました。私の授業はいつも楽しく、生徒の

皆さんも楽しんでくれています。しかし私の授業は、教育上生徒の

ためになるものでもなければいけません。

　英語集中合宿は私に、楽しんだり、ゲームをしたり、難しい活動

を行う機会を与えてくれました。また、普段の授業で教えていない

１年生と出会うこともできました。熱意と活気に溢れた生徒と一緒

になることはとても楽しかったです。生徒たちは常に英語を使って、

活動をやり遂げるために大変な努力とエネルギーを注ぎ込んでおり、

その姿がとても印象的でした。

　私は、海賊をテーマにした演習を行いました。海賊の衣装を着た

り、謎を解いたり、新しい単語を覚えたり、互いに競争したりする

ことを、生徒たちはとても楽しんでくれて良かったです。

　参加生徒と楽しいときを過ごすことができました。彼らと話し、

彼らのことをよりよく知るのはとても素敵なことでした。日本の生

徒は恥ずかしがることがあるのですが、集中合宿では彼らは積極的

に英語で私に話しかけてきました。それがとても嬉しかったです。

来年を楽しみにしています。

 

２．ジョーの授業

　私は、生徒たちが創造的に、そしてチームワーク力を高めるため

の機会が持てるような演習を行いました。生徒たちは４人組になり、

人々が写った写真と簡単なワークシートを与えられました。各グルー

プはその写真についての短い物語を協力して作りました。

　私はいつも、生徒たちの英語力と、短時間に多くのことを成し遂

げる力に驚かされます。生徒たちは充実したときを過ごし、ユニーク

なキャラクターを考え出しました。また、授業の最後で自分たちの

作った物語を他の生徒に発表しました。

　普段と異なる環境で、１対１で生徒同士が話すのはみんなにとっ

て楽しく、また素晴らしい機会となりました。教室の中では消極的

になってしまいがちな生徒も、この集中合宿ではコミュニケーショ

ンをとろうと懸命に努力していました。

　今年の集中合宿は私にとって４回目の参加となりました。集中合

宿は生徒たちが自分たちの知っている語彙を使って英語力を高める

素晴らしい機会です。２０１０年の合宿はこれまでで最も成功した

合宿でした。２０１１年の英語集中合宿が早くも楽しみです。

 

２．第１０回こすもす杯　英語暗唱大会

　２８の中学校から５５名の生徒が参加した暗唱大会では、内１５

名が９月２５日の決勝に進みました。
