Age of civil war in the Southern Yamashiro Region

From Saturday, October 19, 2024 to Sunday, December 8, 2024

<Exhibition Objective>
 The Sengoku period began with the Onin War (1467-1477) and continued for about 100 years. Wars spread across the country. In the southern Yamashiro region, a dispute over the succession of the Hatakeyama clan, one of the shogunate’s regent families, was waged, and the conflict dragged on. Exhausted by the fighting, local lords banded together and drove out the Hatakeyama clan, achieving autonomy for eight years. This was the famous Yamashiro Province Uprising (1485).
 It was previously believed that the local lords’ self-governance was dissolved in 1493, but a study of the Owari Kasai family documents discovered in recent years has revealed that the local lords had constructed a network for self-defense throughout the Sengoku period. In addition, when we look at the remains of castles built by the local lords, the structure and characteristics of Minamiyama Castle have become clear through a medieval castle survey conducted by the Kyoto Prefectural Board of Education and past excavation surveys.
 This exhibition brings together archaeological and historical materials based on the results of recent surveys and research, providing a glimpse into the southern Yamashiro region during the Sengoku period.
