Today students engaged in mock interviews with me in order to prepare themselves for the real interviews they’ll be conducting during their upcoming excursion to Fushimi Inari Taisha. The students were tasked with creating a simple list of questions that will be asked to foreign tourists visiting the shrine during their excursion. The goal of this activity, however, is broader than just asking a few questions. We want students to be able to confidently and naturally engage with others in English in a less curated environment. Speaking English is easier between students and school faculty during planned lessons, but the true challenge is performing this out in the wild; where students have to learn to initiate conversations on their own and cope with unexpected turns in conversation that may not so conveniently incorporate their vocabulary lists!

今日、生徒たちは模擬インタビューを行い、今後の伏見稲荷大社での校外学習で実際に行うインタビューに向けて準備しました。生徒たちは、参拝に来ている外国人観光客に質問するための、シンプルな質問リストを作成するという課題に取り組みました。
しかし、この活動の目的は、単にいくつかの質問をすることだけではありません。より広い狙いがあります。それは、生徒たちがより自然に、自信を持って、整えられた環境ではない場所で英語でコミュニケーションできるようになることです。
授業で行う生徒同士や教員との英語での会話は比較的簡単ですが、本当の挑戦は“外の世界”で英語を使うことです。生徒たちは、自分から会話を始めたり、語彙リストには載っていないような予想外の展開にも対応したりする必要があります。
