Signs for Your Interests
This page features hobbies like walking, mountain climbing, and many other hobbies that ALT's might have. If your own hobby isn't listed, try finger spelling the name of it using Page Two: The 50 Sounds of the Japanese Language.

1. My hobby is…
(私の趣味は…−わたしのしゅみは…)

First, point to the center of your chest with the extended index finger (indicating yourself). Next, put the open right hand next to your right cheek palm out with the fingers pointing up and the thumb to the left. After that, move the hand to the lower left of the jaw while making a fist (looks like you are catching a ball). Then, make the sign for your hobby (in this case, videogames). To make the sign for videogames, place the open hands palms out, thumbs up in front of the stomach giving the interlocutor the image of you holding a video game controller. You then move your thumbs as if pressing down on the controller's buttons.

2. Sports (スポーツ)

There are two ways to make the sign for sports :

a. Place the open hands about 15 centimeters apart in front of the chest with the palms facing each other. Circle them away from you, alternating one closer to you and one farther away (this mimics the image of someone running).

b. Fist both hands and extend the thumbs. Place the fisted hands about 15 centimeters apart in front of the chest with the palms facing each other and the thumbs pointing up. Alternate moving one toward you and one away from you a few times (this mimics the image of people running in a race).

3. Walking (散歩する−さんぽする)

Extend your index and middle fingers from your fisted right hand and place it in front of the right side of your chest. With the fingers pointing down (making an image of a standing person), move your hand away from you as you scissor your fingers (giving the image of a person walking).

4. Hiking (ハイキング)

Open both hands with the fingers splayed (these signs represent groups of people) and place them in front of the chest, fingers pointing up thumbs back toward you, with the palms facing each other. The left hand should be held away from you a little bit more than the right. To complete the sign move the hands away from you with a bouncing motion to give the image of two groups of people rambling along.

5. Mountain Climbing (登山−とざん)

First, make the sign for mountain with your right hand by cupping it, palm down and fingers pointing left, a little above the left hip and arcing it over to the right hip making the shape of a mountain. Next, extend your index and middle fingers from your fisted right hand and place it in a little above your right hip. With the fingers pointing down (making an image of a standing person), move your hand up and to the left in an arc as you scissor your fingers (giving the image of a person walking up a mountain).

6. Fishing (釣り−つり)

Hold the hands in front of the stomach with the hands fisted and the index fingers extended and pointed toward the interlocutor. The left should be out just a little more than the right giving the interlocutor the image of the signer holding a fishing pole. To finish the sign, the signer jerks their hands, pointing the fingers up a little to give the interlocutor the image that they have caught a fish.
