III. Concluding Paragraph
PARTS OF AN
ESSAY
INTRODUCTION -A few sentences explaining your topic in general terms can lead the reader gently to your
thesis. Each sentence should
become gradually more specific, until you reach your thesis.
Here is a short example written by a Sagano High School student. It is a good introduction because it is short
and clear. It very simply explains the subject
and gives an opinion.
I think that the book The Ring written by Bernard Smith which takes place in a small town
near the sea is a story about
human jealousy and Egocentricity.
BODY – The body paragraphs will explain your essay's topic. Each of the main ideas that you
listed in your outline will become a paragraph in your essay. If your outline contained three
main ideas, you will have three body paragraphs. Each main idea should be supported with facts
and
examples.
Here is a short example written by a Sagano High School student. It is a good body paragraph because it has
one topic and uses facts and examples.
I think the book is about the importance of doing what we like and not giving up because of
the following reasons. Firstly, Tony liked music very much and he really enjoyed singing songs and
playing the piano. Secondly, he made a lot of effort and it is shown by the fact that he practiced
very hard for the competition
and won it. His efforts bore fruit.
CONCLUSION – The conclusion should clearly review the main points, being careful not to restate them
exactly,
or briefly describe your opinion about the topic.
Here is a short example written by a Sagano High School student. It is a good beginning to a conclusion
paragraph because it restates the main idea in a
different way and reviews the main point.
After having read the book Crossing the Dark Continent by Daniel Defoe I think the author
wanted us to know about the fact that we are helpless against nature and to keep in mind
that human beings were mistaken in the pass. The author tried telling these things through
this story as I have shown
above.
Below is a checklist you should use when you finish writing an Essay. If you answer yes to everything,
you
are finished!
